“Seize the Day: Enjoy, Learn and Prepare” seminar series

DESCRIPTION:

Session Three of the "Seize the Day" will be highlighting care giving and advocacy. Making up the team to provide information on care giving are Lynne Raisor, Family Caregiver Resource Specialist, and Debra Sheard, Regional Ombudsman, from the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on the Aging, and Renee Long, Social Worker III, Adult Home Specialist, from DSS. Information will be provided on the types of care givers available, how to manage care for a loved one at home, and the facilities which provide care, such as assisted living homes and nursing homes. The concept of aging in place and how a community can support persons staying in their own homes will be presented. At this session, lunch will be provided by the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging, one of the "Seize the Day" series sponsors. Following lunch, Gary Roth will describe his experiences when his role went from that of an acquaintance to that of an advocate. Lou Rogers will also focus on advocacy with a look at how to be an effective advocate for ourselves as well as for others. Proud Session Three sponsor is Colony Tire. DESCRIPTION:

Session Four of "Seize the Day" will look at the legal, social and ethical issues of end of life planning. Linda Rahilly, an experienced Hospice and palliative nurse, will discuss the role of hospice, agencies which provide hospice care, how to arrange for hospice care, and related end of life information. Rev. C. Douglas Eddy, Minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Edenton, will focus on the impact of a death within the family, how grief effects individuals differently, understanding and honoring your loved ones preferences. Paul Miller, owner of the Miller Funeral Home, will walk participants through final arrangements, related legal issues, obituaries, funeral costs, and related subjects. After a lunch provided by St. Anne Women's Club, Richard Trottier from Legal Aid of Raleigh will discuss various legal documents such as wills, trusts, durable power of attorney, medical directive, and the importance of each. DESCRIPTION:

Session Five of "Seize the Day" seminar series is titled "Finances, Scams, Insurance and Veteran's Benefits". The three speakers for this session bring a wealth of experience and knowledge on these topics. Michael Adams, Advocate and Advisor, Dover Medical Billing Review, will focus on the costs of health care, fraud in health care, costs of insurance (health and long term), and will provide a look at the billing by doctors, hospitals and labs. Sheila Bailey, Executive Officer to the Director of the Virginia Department of Veteran's Affairs, will provide guidance to veterans about possible benefits. Barbara Bennett, Investor Education Specialist from the Securities Division, NC Department of State, will provide a look at "Golden Year Finances 101".
