“Seize the Day: Enjoy, Learn and Prepare”

DESCRIPTION:

A dynamic "Seize the Day" series on successful aging will open with a focus on making lives as healthy and enjoyable as possible. The first session, "It's All About a Better Life - Now!'', will open with Connie Parker, Manager of the Chowan Senior Center, speaking about how everyone can adopt a healthier lifestyle to increase their quality of life. Barry Mowbray, Northeast Regional Manager of the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) from Raleigh, will review how Medicare is designed to help meet the hospital and medical costs of senior citizens over 65 and for some disabled persons under 65. Melanie Bunn, a dementia training specialist from Alzheimers North Carolina Inc., will provide tools for age proofing the brain, focusing on ways to ward off age-related memory loss. DESCRIPTION:

Session Two of the "Seize the Day" seminar series will focus on managing a health crisis. Lynn Dale, Manager of Case Management Services at Vidant Chowan Hospital, will discuss patient focused care, role of the hospitalist and scope of services. Sabrina Sanders, Executive Director of Albemarle Home Health Care, will provide practical information on preparing for a health crisis, from cleaning out your medicine cabinet, planning for an absence, to keeping your medical information updated. Peter Krupp, from Independent Living of the North Carolina CHHS, will go through the steps of assessing your home for safety and accessibility and how to adapt your home to meet changing needs. “Seize the Day: Enjoy, Learn and Prepare” seminar series

DESCRIPTION:

Session Three of the "Seize the Day" will be highlighting care giving and advocacy. Making up the team to provide information on care giving are Lynne Raisor, Family Caregiver Resource Specialist, and Debra Sheard, Regional Ombudsman, from the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on the Aging, and Renee Long, Social Worker III, Adult Home Specialist, from DSS. Information will be provided on the types of care givers available, how to manage care for a loved one at home, and the facilities which provide care, such as assisted living homes and nursing homes. The concept of aging in place and how a community can support persons staying in their own homes will be presented. At this session, lunch will be provided by the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging, one of the "Seize the Day" series sponsors. Following lunch, Gary Roth will describe his experiences when his role went from that of an acquaintance to that of an advocate. Lou Rogers will also focus on advocacy with a look at how to be an effective advocate for ourselves as well as for others. Proud Session Three sponsor is Colony Tire.
